Soundbox is solid wood stave construction, smoothly rounded to be confortable against the shoulder (see lower left) Soundboard is sitka spruce, thicker at the bottom for higher-tension strings. Soundboard boards are not edge-glued, allowing for humidity changes without damage. Better freedom of vibration is a extra bonus. Woods are usually maple (left), walnut/maple (left below), and cherry/maple (right below). Stands are planned to balance perfectly against the shoulder when strings are vertical, so there is no pressure on the shoulder. Various designs are available.
